Ravine Battle video from Gulf Wars

Post by iaenmor »

Thought some of you might want to see the Ravine battle at Gulf Wars this year. Its from a helmet cam on one of the combat archers.

That is SO cool!

People always ask me "What's it like out there?"

Now I can show them a video!

Helmet Cam

Post by Ieuan Gower »

This is from my Man-at-Arms, William Arrwemakre. It is a new rig... he apparently has more footage but was eager to get something up on the web to show his friends. There should be more posted in the next week or so.

Ieuan

P.S. This is some of the better helmet-cam footage I have seen, (as far as viewability is concerned), unlike heavies combat archers tend to look in one direction long enough for a viewer to follow. Some of the other helmet-cam footage make you motion sick to try and watch.

Cool! You caught me and several of the Bryn Gwlad fighters near the end of the video. I want to see the next segment!

Cool didn't know Bill was one of yours. Smack the bacon loving fool for me the next time you see him. Didn't make it to GW this year and he was camping and shooting with my group this year.

According to Bill he has about the first 30 minutes of the ravine battle on the camera. He is working on the rest and I or others should keep it updated here. Kinda neat to see it that way ain't it.

Without sound its kind of surreal, almost like playing a computer game. I would not show this to someone who has never seen SCA combat before, I don't think it gives anywhere near a full impression.

All that said, its REALLY cool to watch! Good job William!

Could you get us some tech specs on the helmet cam ?

It's one of those things I've occasionally considered doing for years, but have never had quite enough information about which gear to use and how.

Thanks.

That's what I thought too. It reminded me of playing Morrowind, or Oblivion. Very cool.

Funny -- it does kind of look like a video game. When William drew an arrow back and the camera was looking right through the ABD tube, I almost expected a little circle and crosshairs to appear on the target!

Video and equipment used

Post by William Arwemakere »

Hey all,

I'm glad you guys are enjoying the video. I missed one plug in, hence the lack of sound. Future videos will be better. I'm new to youtube posting, so it's taking me a bit to play with the best compression settings to maintain the resolution to still see the arrow hits. At full resolution, the 3 minute segment is over 1Gb!

The setup I used was purchased from www.QVCVideo.com . They make a number of compact video solutions, including 4 way PiP setups for autoracing (or helmet cam w/ one shot wireless arrow cam perhaps?)

Here's a link to the eBay listing. You can contact them directly as well.

http://cgi.ebay.com/RACE-Dash-CIGAR-Cam ... dZViewItem

The camera is metal bodies, and quite tough. No, I haven't been hit on the cam, but I did roll down a hill over the cam several times with no damage. I mounted the cam on the righ side of my helm, as I usually get hit on the left. It will be tucked up under the rim of my new kettle when it's done.

The fact that I draw to right in front of the camera was a complete fluke; this was just the best spot for it. Nice to know I have a fairly consistant anchor point.

Stay tuned, I'll have more up soon.

Okay, I've got more footage up. Still more of the same.

Search for AnTirKP (me) or "GW17"

Enjoy.

That's really neat. I bet if we could hear sounds, we'd hear "FUCK" or "GODDAMMMITTTT" every time you fired :D

It's funny how the SCA is a small town. I recognized a few people.
