I need to knock together a quick gauge for a tourney at the weekend. Mine has disappeared...

I'm more inclined towards these designs. The 1" dia stock can be parted off on a lathe and pinned to the plate or it can be built in like version 2. The 1/4" hole is just for attaching a lanyard or belt-loop. You check 3" spear tips with a finger on either side of the 3" portion to create the jaws of a calliper.
I also keep a 1.0000" +0.0001"/-0 class Z gage pin and a copy of the gage qualification R&R in my bag for Pennsic and other large events. Not many people will argue with that. We've actually used that gage pin to check that micrometers were reading properly. (Yes I'm a geek at times)
