Helm Help

Post by Sigmund Hawking »

I got this Helm from a fellow getting out of the SCA and was wondering if anyone could pin the time period it would fit in? Thanks in advance.

Hey, Carlos' cousin! (Check Halberds' kit helms)
I would say late 12th, early 13th.
Prost!

Cool what would be a good Kit to build around it?

Mail, mail and mail. Maybe a CoP or pair of plates, depending on how late you go. Wear a gambeson underneath. YOu could also wear an armoured surcote.

Hail,
thats practically the same helm Im building around, so around 1230-1210 is the best estimate wihtin the thirteenth I can give.
Id say sleeveless surcoat with integral mitts on a mail hauberk, In my mind that should be a good image to think of. If you want, I can PM you some links and stuff I have.

However, I think Sigmund is armoring for the SCA, so there will be some safety-driven mods. Some kind of low-profile hard gauntlet. His plate kidney coverage is almost a matter of taste within the desired performance, but a pair-of-plates hard body is one option, a cuirie another if he wants to spend money on leather (because he will, you betcha) -- and it too may be strategically backed with rigid pieces; or else he can go the classic SCA kidney belt, either on or concealed within his aketon, or gambeson in the looser sense.

The helm looks pretty good all over; Sigmund may want, or be Marshal-ordered to get, a safety gorget for beneath his camailoid.

The consensus is falling generally around the time of the Fourth Crusade, so that should be his era to research. God (Wills It) only knows what he'll find if he gets busy and digs. 8)<---equipped for the glaring sun of the Holy Land

You may also want to find an armourer nearby who has some micrometers. The top of that helm looks pretty beat up, and you want to make sure it is thick enough.

I don't know, Oswyn; I can't even see temple creases in the pic. Scuffs, yes, but that all looks like surface finish that is, um, less than professional. But I can't see a single dent.

Aye, there are no dents in the helm at all, and the fellow i got it from it was his first Helm he had made. He was fighting with it for a quite a while so it had been checked over with a Marshall.

Great to know. I am always just a bit wary when I see "really old helm" as I know someone who was fighting in a 17ga helm, due to all of the beatings it had taken. Always pays to take a second and make sure your head is safe.
