Most likely the Knights and the head marshal.

In the past we have 4 fields, 2-3 fields bring your best, 1 field off weapons and one field for teaching.

It will most likely be something like that, however I will post to the Knights list and see what is up.

His Majesty in his great wisdom has left guidance with his Grace on how he wishes the day to be run.

Though it looks like we are still hashing things out, it will be some bearpits while the Knights observe the fighters followed my the Knights getting into the lists.

Something like that.

TOC is one of those must go to events for me. It is where I feel I can go and see those unbelts who want to impress, be noticed or just meet Knights. It is one of those places where you can get to meet the Knights better and learn. If you are a squire and want to try to get to that next level (whatever it might be depending on where you are at), or if you are not a squire and are looking for a Knight to get closer to. Or course you can do the impress and be noticed thing by doing well in crown but everyone is focused on crown and not learning or getting to know the fighters better.

It is also a place where I can get to see my brother Knights. We all push ourselves at TOC. There are usually so many fighters that it is a grueling day for us.

What do we look for at TOC? Each Knight looks for something different. If i had to break it down I would say Fire and Prowess. Even if someone isn't as skilled as they want to be they can still have that fire in their belly and light in their eyes that they love this, want more and want to take it to us. This is the fighters chance to look for and take down Knights that might be on their "list", it is also the chance to see what Knights might catch their eye if they are not squired.

Do we notice those fighters who are not there who we think should be? Yup, we do, and we talk about it. We even notice those Knights who we think should be and are not. Do we take ourselves to task over it. Yes. We judge both.

This year there will also be a Northern War Muster the day after at the same site. The North is very serious about War and this is just another chance for us to practice our skills as the Hammer of the Atlantian Army.

I look forward to everyone who can make it this Saturday; I will miss those who can not.

Sir Guy

PS. For Blackstone Raids, the King done call very often. How cool is it to answer that call and be able to fight at his side in a foreign land?

Please crosspost to the various lists.

Maureen and I will be celebrating our 12th Wedding Anniversary, at the Tournament of Chivalry.

Food has been ordered, sweets have been bought, pillows and cushions will be packed and Maureen will rest in comfort with my daughter in attendance while I fight. Maureen's helmet is being worked on by Durasteel and Heinric is still working on her body armour.

She will be "logistics" this time. At the "Saphire Joust" I will be logistics, and she will fight.

Our house is about 30 minutes away, so we'll be heading home that evening and I will return in the morning (maybe Maureen will too) do pratice as one of Atlania's loyal troopers.

Looking forward to a fun tournament,

Two things I learned at TOC this year.
1.) Make sure the padding in your helmet is not blown out.

Happy Anniversary Aaron,

I am sorry I missed the celebration (and of course the tournament) but I am spending Passover with my wife's family in New Jersey. (unfortunately, the tournament coincided with the start of this Jewish holiday this year)

Skutai has it right, your kit reveals a degree of dedication and attention to detail that is impossible to hide.

I hope the celebration was worthy of the love between you, and the wonderful family you two are raising together.

Your friend,

Rowan of Needwood

Thanks! It was a lot fun, and once again I know I have a lot to learn. Good knights taught a lot, with exceptional patience and decorum. They understood that the learning curve for me is a difficult one for me, and gave basic advice in a positive matter.

It was an excellent tournament, and I appreciated it.

Maureen (Midori) got a lot of compliments, and at least three roses / carnations ended up getting totalled on the field. The "deflowered on the field" and "rose to the occasion" jokes were common, and still funny even after the fifth or sixth rendition.

For a $10 investment in a dosen roses, it was well worth it. That will be done again, just for the novelty. I bought a dosen carnations (red) as well, just in case they were destroyed quickly, but only three roses ended up in pedals on the field.

Spending $90 on platers of meat-and-cheese, olive and bread won't happen again. I had to throw out 90% of the food, as it was not eaten. Lesson learned in what survives and gets eaten.

Freezing Accelerate and water to use to keep the cooler...well...cool, works nicely. Accelerate was nice as a slushy.

Matched weapons is definately a plus, and I'll keep doing that. Lots of people had fun with matched polehammers, and that made for a lot of fun. As soon as I can authorize in other things (like maces, swords, etc) I'll make more matched weapons.

I need to find a place to make "business cards" so Maureen and I can recruit locally on Fort Meade and other locations. Anyone have any good suggestions? We've got the loaner armour, but we need people.

Also, we need suggestions on how to do good demos locally on Fort Meade for recruiting. Maureen is trying to tell me that there is more to the SCA than fighting, and that we need to do more than just fighting at a demo. She pointed out that SHE got me into the SCA, and therefore beautiful women are a good draw to get fighters into the SCA...at least the male ones (in some cases).

Also, we need a suggestion for a good trailer for an average mini-van.

While we were at the clean up today, we got a lot of advice on tents.

Duke Andre is working on getting the mail gussets for me, and then I think I should have a lot of fun at the Plate and Mail tournament at Pennsic (if it's going on).

I met Ursus of Anglesley, Sir Corby and a host of others I've "met" here on the Archive, but sadly it was a wirlwind of new faces with familiar names.

Ursus of Anglesley will have pictures, and I'm looking forward to seeing them. Does anyone else have pictures?

I've got a snipet of video of other people fighting and some wide shots of people standing still. :(

With respect,
With respect,

Aaron:

it's true that people clobbering each other in armor draws a crowd. It's also equally true that somebody sitting still and working on chainmail, or a spinning loom, or lace, or illumination, will draw just as much of a crowd, if not a bigger one. I've seen it.

It's really irritating.

email me if you need any other help demo-wise.

Aaron, to see you on the field in full armor...can I say...wow! I thought it added to the environment greatly. I was participating as an MIT, so I got a chance to watch all the learning happening on the field and it looked like everyone was having a great time.

Brath, a newer fighter to the area got repremanded for having exposed duct-taped elbows and t-shirt sleeves. <sigh> A lot of his gear was burned in a house fire in Ohio, so he's fightng with what he's got and has 0 $ for new stuff. That comment, meant in ernest I'm sure, made enough of an impression on him that he mentioned it after the event.

I think it's outstanding to see you on the field in full armor and it just adds to the ambience. I received a lovely flower from a young lady-- think it came from your house hold. I saw the food over at your area, but didn't want to assume it was for the populace. Thank you for your kindness during this event.

That lovely young lady is my wife, of twelve years. Or her designated subordinate, my daughter. Or her designated subordinate, anybody my daughter made friends with that day. I'm glad you got a rose!

How local is Brath? I've got two (almost) full suits of loaner armour at the house, and many associated bits if he needs a loaner for a short bit. I'd need the armour back though.

Thanks to the Autocrat and all the organizers who put the event together.

Thanks especially to the kitchen crew who somehow managed to produce an excellent feast despite a drastically compressed time schedule.

Thanks to the Knights who came out and worked themselves ragged fighting and instructing all the eager young fighters (and a couple of avid old ones).

Thanks to the marshals, MsoL, and waterbearers who enabled the event to take place (and kept some absent-minded fighters out of trouble). Thanks especially the waterbearers who enabled all the others to keep going.

Thanks to the Barony of Storvik for hosting the event and finding so outstanding a site. Those who did not stay for the feast, and/or did not stay over, you missed a lot.

However, thanks to the weather on Sunday the war practice was a washout - almost literally.

And thanks to the DJ on whatever station I was tuned to, as I crossed the Potomac River Bridge in rain so heavy I could barely see four car lengths, who spun "Bright Shiny Day." Most perfectly ironic timing I've experienced in years!

I know that I had three roses "explode" on the field. If someone has a photograph of that, I'd love to see it!

Thanks!

PS: These photos show where I need to work. There are HUGE openings that I'm not exploiting.

Aaron, still photographs don't tell the whole story. The openings you see here may only have been available for a split second as your opponent is transitioning from one maneuver to another. They also may have become available only because your opponent knew you couldn't exploit them in whatever position you were in at that time.

Get some fighting film of yourself. I prefer Quicktime simply because I can pause the action and advance it frame by frame.

Kat,

Sigh, not that I really like it but Atlantia has a field appearance law (check the marshal's page) that then King Logan put in. While it has greatly improved how Atlantian's look on the field, it is hard on new fighters. And marshals are required to enforce it.

That being said, the Ponte Alto War council has an armoring committee that can help out Brath. I also told Brath I would help him out with some good 2stick swords. Email the Ponte Alto list and ask for Baron Max or the Baronial Champian, Aethilgar.

Sir Guy
