So the weather finaly decides to cooperate with me after nearly 1 1/2 weeks of my 2 week vacation. I've got the shop in a semi workable condition and I decided to make myself a buckler since the first attempt was decidedly too poor an attempt at rolling an edge. got the dishing part real good, now that I've breaken in my rawhide hammers in my dishing forms, took my time with the edge roll (decided to do an inside roll instead of an outside roll this time) Even put a piece of 16ga wire inside the roll. Got the handle shaped, attached some ironwood scales to beef it up, rivet the thing on, voila, it's finished. When I was peining the rivets for the handle I noticed the handle is coming loose on my ball-pein, no problem, it's still the original handle, I can tap it out, maybe even slavage it (it's an epoxied on handle, I can grind off the epoxy and wedge it in place I'm thinking) and that's when it happens, I'm grinding the last remnants of the epoxy when my grinder kicks off and takes me on the tip of the index finger... mangles the shit out of my fingertip, snaps the fingernail in 1/2, lengthwise (I can kiss that fingernail goodbye in a few weeks) and spatters my not so new but still in good shape jeans with blood... damnit... well, the damage is not so bad that it needs a trip to the ER but still pisses me off to no end, next week is supposed to be gorgeous and I was hoping to get many more hours in the shop, now instead I'll have to take it easy and I can pretty much forget about any hammer work (lead hand, if I grip anything the damn thing will just start bleeding again...) Guess I can still get some work done on practice weapons I'm making but alas, no armour...
at least it's now and not at the beguining of my vacation...
I'll post pics of the buckler as soon as the epoxy cures on the handle scales and I give them a couple of coats of stain.
cheers
Chris
