Not enough information
Is this for SCA use?
Do you want it to last a long time or is this for a special occasion?

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. -Aristotle

If it is for SCA use and not a specialty shield (something that will only be used on occasion)
I would recommend aluminium. To do wood, you will need to go fairly thin and thus it won't last long. If you go thick it will be so heavy you won't be able to use it.

For a wooden shield the size of a scutum you will need to reinforce the corners (at least the upper right corner) and the right side. (Assuming you are a righty). If you are planning on using a center boss, do yourself a favor and put in straps for the arm just in case you find you want them.

I am not trying to sound like a period-Nazi, but when you say "Scutum", what shape? Scutum just means shield. What time frame...cavalry or infantry. Are you looking for a war-shield or tourny shield? Either way I would go with wood, but the shape can play a factor in your choice of materials.
