If I might have a moment of pride...

Post by Diglach Mac Cein »

Yesterday, at North Oaken War Manuevers, my son (known in the SCA as Torcc Mc Dilan) authorized in armored combat and joined my warband on the field.

During a brigde battle, an opponent charge me with a polearm while I was fighting spear - got inside my point, had me dead to rights. Until Torcc stepped to my side out of nowhere And dropped him! He then stepped to my side and we waded into the enemy -

We gotted dropped pretty fast - but that was easily one of the best moments in my SCA career.

HOOBAH!!!!
Take that moment 'O pride and cherish it. Tis a fine thing to know you have raised a fine young warrior. I really wish we could have been at N.O.W.M. but alas life would not permit it.

This past Pennsic,
I had several moments exactly
as you describe
They could have been real swords and spears,
and I would have watched my lifeblood
spread out on the ground around me
and been truly happy.
My son is the man I have always wanted to be.

Awesome! My son has started training with the adults and should be authorized in time for Gothic war in August. I envy you and look forward to joining the fighter-dad club.

Congratulations! Fighting along side of my son, Baron Constantine, fills me with joy each and every time. He bails me out so often I can't count. It is such a hoot. Enjoy it, it a very special.

Very very cool. Hope to meet your son at Pennsic, if he is able to come.

chuckle.. you realize that's just impossible, Your Grace. Your son is... 7, 8 years old ? :P

There are times when I really feel old

And I cannot possibly express the kind of envy I feel for you gentlemen whose sons or daughters are joining you upon the field.

You are blessed in the greatest manner that life offers to a man.

I got a bit to wait for my stepson to stand in the lines next to me. 5 years and counting. He has never really shown an interest in fighting til this year. So I'm getting him squared away for the boffer program then will be turning him loose on the world.
Hopefully he sticks to it and Come Pennsic 2013 He'll be beside me..

I wish I had taken a picture of Sir Dilan and his son.

You could not see Dilan's face for the smile!

Or his son's!

They both fought with all their heart this last weekend... and it was grand!

ps... you could also see Sir Dilan chomping at the bit while his son was going through the adult authorization!

Torcc was the best authorization that I fought all day (and I fought about 7 or 9 of them). I am positive that he will do very well and continue to make his father proud.

Thanks everyone...

Yeah, my wife says she hasn't seen me so giddy after an event in years.

Both HRM and HRH Midrealm gave him tokens that day - a copper arm ring and a viking coin - Torrc was stunned.

He woke up the next morning and asked "We do this again in two weeks, right?"

I gave him a copy of Anvil of Virtue as an "Authorization Gift".

Keep the SCA fun for your kids gang - and they will give you the gift of renewing the fun of the SCA for you... seriously.

What a great feeling that must be! I look at my squires, past and present, as my sons. I have enjoyed watching them grow over the years and fighting side by side with them. I look forward to the day my own flesh and blood can do the same. It might be a while as young Sigfried is only 2 at this time... :)

I hope to still be doing this when he is ready to step in battle next to me.

If only I were so blessed! That is awesome! Just reading it gives me inspiration.
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. -Aristotle
