Avail. soon -14th cent money changer's purse

Post by Cat »

This is another pouch style I will be offering when I open back up again. It's an early 14th century money changer's pouch, based off of a Dutch find.

These will be available in elk or deerskin (elk shown). Hand stitched with waxed linen thread. Drawstrings and belt loop are veg tan.

Price:
Deerskin: $35
Elk: $40

The pouchlets and the main pouch are all closed by a double drawstring "mechanism". Pull the drawstrings in opposite directions to close.

Once my hubby gets home, I will steal his wallet and cell phone and see what capacity this has and post it here.

EDIT: Capacity - this will easily hold a wallet, cell phone, and a bundle of keys with a bit of room to spare for small things like a lighter or chap stick. I've got to find some small stuff (that people might be carrying) to stick in the pouchlets to determine their capacity. What small things do you guys carry? They will easily hold coins, but I'm trying to think of what else y'all might want with you at an event. A tube of chapstick might fit in there height wise, and if it does, you could probably get a couple in there. A lttle tub of Carmex (love that stuff!) will fit. You could get a few dice in there, a couple of single keys, matches...that kind of thing will fit.

Thanks for looking.

I have opinions of my own- strong opinions- but I don't always agree with them.

Might be nice offered in a thin leather - like goatskin. That might make it easier to do the same number of slits and thinner laces, like the original.

I do plan on getting some goatskin to try, and if it works out, that will be available as well. I have some concerns about the durability of leather that thin, though. I think if it came down to it, people would choose slightly thicker but more durable leather over thin, accurate leather. I'm hoping the goatskin is super durable, as I would like to have these look more like the originals.

As for number of slits, I think I'm pretty close. I counted 10 per side on the original, and that's what I've got on the main pouch. I don't recall offhand what I've got on the pouchlets.

Randy W.,
I will post here in the classifieds once I'm ready to reopen. I hope to have a couple of each pouch in stock and ready to go. Well, all except that 16th century money changer's pouch I made. The prototype will be the only one available right away. Any others will have to be ordered considering the high price and large quantity of leather involved. That one may even require a non refundable downpament. Not sure yet....

Thanks,
Cat

Quick update on the goat - I ordered the sample pack from Hollanders to see how it holds up to stress on the stitching. If it holds up, I will probably get some..although NOT from Hollanders. Theirs is quite expensive, with some being around $23 a square foot. It sure is purdy though.

If it works out, I will order some and get a pouch made up and then get some pricing together.
