WANTED: Hundred Years War Crossbow

Wondering of any bowyers that produce such a thing. Links welcome. The Prince George based Bow Sinister doesn't seem to carry very period crossbows. Want a bit of authenticity, or at least some instruction on how to create such a thing.

Crossbows are tough. Bob Reed (Chef de Chambre) and I are both looking for a good period arblast from the late 14th-15th century for living history and it's tough.

Finding a decent looking SCA combat crossbow is easier. This may just have to serve as a bump until someone who knows who to get you in touch with comes in.

You can add me to the list, too. I'd like both a good sporting crossbow and a military crossbow circa 1480, southern German. As with most things, the cost and quality will rise together, with the sources becoming scarce as authenticity rises.

I've had discussion with Chef regarding sources. I don't have notes here...

Yesterday, I stumbled across (again) another website with crossbows - Tod, a gent in the UK who generally makes some really nice stuff. I've seen a few of his pieces in person, but only small edged pieces.

I've had a few online discussions with him, and have always found him to be a great guy. I haven't looked too heavily into what he's offering and compared them to sources, but I know he's pretty open to discussion about one-off stuff.

This company has been around for a long long time...I held one of them at the SCA 20th Anniversary...very nice..never shot one...

We currently have one being made by New World Arbalest. It should be closed to being finished, ours is Cherry with bone. We'll post pix when it's finished.

The more authentic the bow, the more expensive it is. Jens Sensfelder in Germany makes very authentic bows - but I believe a composite prod bow, which would be most accurate for the 14th century, runs about 3000 euro's.

Accurate crossbows, steel prods, begin around $700, and for an arblalest with windlass, and say a 500 lb draw weight, your are likely looking at $1000 - $1500
