Hi All,
I will be going to Northern Italy and Austria soon and I was wondering what people would suggest as the best places to see armour in those areas. Museaum (or castle as the case may be) names and location would be great, and maybe a bit about what they have. I know that there are several spots with tons of armour which I want to try to hit, but I just wanted to make sure I don't overlook an opportunity to see something unique. I am looking forward to seeing what everyone recommends. Thanks.
John

I have hit most of them and would highly recomend the Vienna collections as well as Graz. In Italy if you can get there the Churburg collection is nice though it is a little out of the way. Brescia has a nice collection as well as several places to look at armour in Milan. Turin's collection was almost completely off display in January of this year. Mantova is supposed to be quite nice as well as several collections in Florence if you make it that far south. There is a collection in Vennice though I've not seen that one. Patrick

In Austria, DEFINATELY go to the Kunsthistorisches museum in Vienna. It is my favorite armour collection. They have several full suits made by Lorenz Helmschmied (if you're into that sort of thing). Overall a very impressive collection housing quite a few "famous" pieces.
Not far away is Graz. For the record Graz is my favorite place on earth
I absolutely LOVE this little city. Right downtown is the Landzeghaus.....a MASSIVE stockpile of arms and armour. It's mostly 16th-17th century munitions stuff. They do have a number of maximilian suits as well. The armour there is basically unguarded and out in the open.
BTW both museums allow photography.

I'm italian, if you are looking for armours you can't miss:
Castel Coira (Churburg)Near Bozen, very close to Austria.
Stibbert (Florence)
Bargello (Florence)
Royal Armoury (Turin) (Some time ago it was closed due to work in progress, i don't know if now it is open)
You could consider Mantova "Madonna delle Grazie" There are 12 armours, and a book written on them by G.Boccia with great pictures.
When you have planned your trip ask me all that you want, i can look for useful informations.
Bye!
