After my first day of fighting at Pennsic I started cramping up something fierce. I drank tons of water and even (gasp) drank some Gatorade (the G2 stuff with less sugar). It was like torture. I tried eating things that normally work on me like, bananas (quiet Alejandro), potato chips, peanuts, anything with salt or potassium in it. I even stretched, for Odin's sake!

The next day I told my tale of woe to a fellow An Tirian who was camping with the East. He said, "Try pickle juice."

I tried it. And it was good. Not a single cramp for the rest of the war. Thanks, Anghous.

For those of you who like both pickles and tequila, I recommend pickle juice margueritas for an after-battle treat. You can get stoned and replace your electrolytes at the same time.

Olive brine = the juice in a can of olives? No WONDER I like that stuff.

Maeryk wrote:Olive brine will work as well. Pickle juice I usually dilute a bit with water.. otherwise it's HARSH and easy to get "Too much" (which will cool you off, make you feel like a million bucks, and give you the hershey squirts to beat the band).

I just mix pickle juice half and half with water, maybe 4 oz in total and swig it, and eat a pickle.

For the record: Vinegar and honey and water will do _exactly_ the same thing.

Someone who wanted to drink his remaining wine in spite of it already beginning to turn into vinegar? Probably a lot more common than you might suppose...

I shan't say a word.

Pickle juice is yummy, if you can stomach it. I'd rather get a Minstrel's Enema. I eat a big carby meal the night before (spaghetti, mac & cheese), fluid up with water just before, and then nosh on fruit and beef jerky.

That is if you have the infrastructure to support a meal plan like that. Personally, I attribute my performance at this pennsic to a camp member fixing me seven pancakes (heavy on the HFCS syrup) and two cups of coffee each laced with one of these -

The Romans had Posca, which is essentially the same. Soured wine, honey and water. That's what the soldiers offered Jesus, not out of spite (which some people think- dude they were mean, givin the dyin man vineagar) but becasue it was the gatoraid of the day.

Hate to be picky but it was spite but not by Romans.
Pontius Pilot had no Imperium and thus could not command Roman troops. The best he had were Auxiliaries. (probably Syrian about 3,000 of them)

As to the spite? The vinegar is given to Jesus via a sponge on a stick. Turns out every Roman has one, you don't want to use anybody elses' sponge stick. That part was very spiteful.

As for the Posca, thats what a Soldier drank. Nothing mean about the Posca.

While it might seem that way, the Gospels actually say that the sponge was placed on a stick at the site of crucifixion- The roman ass wiper would have been pre-attached.

From Mark 15 (Mark is the oldest of the synoptic Gospels)

34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

35And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.

36And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.

First of all the sponge stick would have to be attached to a longer pole or reed as the cross was far to tall to be reached by a sponge stick. Now the soldier could have been kind but the line 'Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.' does seem more mocking than kind. As for a sponge being readily available, I'm just say'n every soldier had one and they were not known for kindness. These are the same guys (Stephaton and Longinus) who threw dice for his clothes.

I don't want to derail the thread though, Pasca is refreshing and helps greatly on the field. Many Romans came to prefer it over wine. One of the most notable being Emp. Vespasian.

Pickle Juice ???

I am relativly new, on my second year now, just got authorized this past Saturday, and fought in our Barony's Summer Champion Lyst. I was drinking plenty of water, and had a good lunch, and for the life of me could not figure out why they offered pickes on the field????

I got home and litterely died for the rest of the evening, and most of Sunday morning. I could barely eat dinner, barely sleep (too tired) and woke up several times.

It totaly blew my mind when I read this thread, and it totaly clicked.

Ok so from now on when the waterbearers offer up some pickles I am going to take them, instead of looking at them sideways, thanking them politley and refusing the pickles......

Hey, does anyone have a eating/drinking plan for an upcomming lyst/fight? Like what do you eat the night before, the morning of, and just before you get on the field??

Thanks all for the ideas.

a lot of fighters don't care fro cross recommendations from other sports, but as a former professional cyclist, I can SERIOUSLY recommend something for these....and who knows more about drugs than us right? kidding.... :D
Try Endurolytes by Hammer nutrition (available at any bike shop or especially at REI) or Sports Legs (also available at REI). Pop a few capsules (1 capsule per 50 lbs of body weight) about a half hour before strenuous muscle activity in hot weather and they work like magic. That and the new gel by GU (octane, about $2.50 for one serving) taken about a half hour before a bout will do wonders....There is also a company called Wormwood Apothecary that makes sport and combat reenactment, LH and SCA specific sports related supplements - all natural and organic stuff. They have a REALLY good muscle rub made from organic peppermint that prevents cramps when you rub it into muscles before and after combat. I've used it on my arms (since I have biceps about the size of wet top ramen after all the years on the bike) and it helps a lot, not to mention it keeps my gambeson from reaking something awful.... I dont know what the website is (you can email them at Wormwood apothecary@gmail.com I think?) and make a request...runs about $15 for a small container of it...
maybe this will help someone...
