Request: Bird Motif

Post by Blaine de Navarre »

I am looking for any and all representations of birds in any medium from Western/Northern Europe (Germanic/Nordic/Celtic) from the Late Migration to Early High Middle ages (maybe 900-1200 or so).

I have already found a number of them googling, but would love it if anyone has some links I have missed, or suggestions of good books to look up.

Thanks!

Look in bestiaries. My favorite is the Aberdeen bestiary, whose exact date seems to be disputed but which seems to fall in your time period. You can find a complete index with links to illustrations here:

http://www.abdn.ac.uk/bestiary/contents.hti

And the rightmost column tells you what animal is illustrated. They include all sorts of birds: several doves, hawks, and eagles, turtle doves, pelicans, owls, magpies, ravens, ostriches, etc.
Strength is itself victory. In weakness there is no happiness. When you wage a struggle, you might win or you might lose. But regardless of the short-term outcome, the very fact of your continuing to struggle is proof of your victory as a human being.

Here is a pic of a carved viking Raven. Can't remember where I found it or exactly what period it is from.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

This is the kind of question where you're not going to get a short & sweet answer -- too open-ended, really. I'm just going to go through a few of my online sources, rather than really overwhelming you ...

Several at Bildindex, including:

Several more at the Morgan Library, but I'm having difficulty getting to the images in their database at the moment.
