How About a "Gazette" Forum?

For those of us who wish to talk about the many styles and facets of recreating Medieval armed combat.

How About a "Gazette" Forum?

Post by Donal Mac Ruiseart »

I don't know if there's any protocol for suggesting forums on here, or if we're even supposed to do it, but I've noticed a lot of posts recently announcing the results of Crown Tourneys, recent and upcoming knightings, and suchlike.

I would think a "Gazette" forum would be an ideal venue for such announcements - and for announcing significant events such as wars or major Pas d'Armes and the like as well.

What thinks the company? And more significantly, what thinks JT?

See, and here I was thinking of a Heraldry forum, for all of the "I need help with my arms" threads that pop up everywhere.

Heraldry et al should go under Interpretive Recreation or Historical Research depending upon the direction the person is going. We have asked in the past about a "news" column but it has always been either diverted to a "meet and greet" or since it deals with Combat here or rarely in the philosophy of Chivalry forum.

Why put things in two spots when you can give it a spot of its own, since it comes up frequently enough?

How are tournaments meet and greet? And I understand why its in the Combat forum, but why clutter up the combat stuff with tourney lists?

IMO, if something its talked about frequently enough, it should get its own spot. Since tourney lists come up every 6 mths or so, why not have an Event list?

to be contrary:

Heraldry is one non-armour A&S among many. Soft kit gets lots more traffic than heraldry here. Then there's scribal, tents and furniture, cooking and brewing. It would multiply ad infinitum.

Trying to whack someone upside the head is a GREAT way to meet and greet. I don't generally feel like I have been properly introduced to another fighter until I've played with them. And tournaments are of interest to the same subset of people who care about combat for the most part. So, it's relevent to the same people and it helps keep the combat area active.

A single heraldry question should only belong in one spot or the other. If you are talking about recreating heraldry then it belongs in the first one, if your talking about historical heraldry it belongs in the later.

I think the AA in general has done a good job at managing the number of sub-forums it has. One of the biggest mistakes made when creating online communities is creating too many little sub-groups. One thing to do without creating a new subgroup is to develope subject line "codes" if a certain boards get too full.

I would like to agree somewhat with the general suggestion with this thread of some sort of News forum or what not that is more heavily moderated. Sometimes I don't know what is going on because I don't go through the meet and greet or off topics very often. So as long as it really remains a place for real things of note like crown and big major SCA tournaments and say like the big jousting events and deaths and what not. But not main stream news. And if it turns too much into an off topics do away with it.

I don't know what qualifications JT looks for in a moderator, but if having a volunteer would affect his choice . . .

What I propose is this: That a forum called "Gazette" be established, for announcing the following items:

  • Knightings or other Peerage elevations, impending and actual
  • Crown Tourney results
  • Deaths of Archive members or of well-known or prominent people within the SCA/WMA/Reenactment community
  • Deeds of Arms (Including such ongoing Deeds as those concerning the Couter of Chivalry)
  • Events with a particularly historical theme (such as Combat of the Thirty) or a literary/Arthurian/romantic theme (e.g., "full dress" Pas d'Armes and Jousts)

And I volunteer to moderate such a list.

Hey guys, I see your point, really I do. But heraldry does seem to be a popular topic here. I cant tell you how many threads I've seen with a "help me design" or "can you blazon this" or "is this legal"? So maybe if we don't create a new subtopic for it, maybe make it a little better known which fora it goes in? Maybe "interpretive recreation" because most of the questions asked are in regards to SCA heraldry?
