SCA mail is in the habit of utilizing a link Aspect Ratio in the range of 4 to 6. One should use AR6 only with heavier wire like 14 gauge. For 16 gauge stick nearer 4. This range of ratios is a good balance between weight, durability, and making time.
Riveted mail can better afford, not to ignore AR, but to inhabit a looser envelope, because its links are mechanically fastened shut.
Inner Diameter ÷ Wire Diameter = Aspect Ratio. (Do not use gauge numbers, you need measured diameters.) Yours is .500 ÷ .80 = 6.25AR. That's pretty big. More typical SCA IDs in 14ga run 5/16"-3/8".
In riveted, seriously consider a finished link ID of 5/16". 3/8" is not exactly bad, but it is on the large side for a historical look; history's mail runs three to five sixteenths. If you want to get cute and use an intermediate diameter between the usual ones, go for it; it'll make a shirt, a fauld, or a camail with just a touch of the unique.
Another question, this one concerns SCA and maille mittens
