A nice cedar chest for around $70

Post by Cian of Storvik »

I've had my eye on a cedar chest at the local craft store for a few months. But at $90+tax it was a price I was not able to give in to. Even though I figure it might me worth the investment to keep moths from eating my garb.
This weekend, my sister mentioned that the store in question (Jo Ann Fabrics) honors competitor coupons like Michael's. And that she had a 40% of coupon she wasn't going to use.
So I got this chest which retails for $90 for $57 with tax. It measures 32"w x 16"h x 15"d. It appears to be eastern red cedar made by the amish according to a leaflet that came in the chest.

It comes unfinished. So you need to put something on the outside. I laquered mine. I also removed the wooden block handles and the cheap cabinet hardware. I added some steel rings and strap hinges, and will put on a hasp when it comes in.

Do not add a finish to the inside. You need to keep that nice cedar smell to keep the moths away.

The 4" rings are from a iron works company. They are only $1/ea. as they're hollow square tubular steel. The staples (the metal strips that hold the rings on the side) are actually some old car parts I had in a box. The strap hinges are off of Ebay.

A note about american cedar is that it's not the same thing as european cedar. In fact, what we call red cedar is actually juniper, but like the real cedars from the mediteranean they resist rot and is averted by cloth eating insects.
Actual mediterranean and spanish cedar has a more uniform grain. And does not have the contrast in color of the heart and sap wood. If you leave american red cedar outside in the sun for a time, the pinkish red wood fades a bit. And the contrasting sap and heart woods will look like the box in these pictures, which is actually what looks to me nearly identical to yew.

The reason I mentioned the coupon is that, according to my sister, the 40% off of a single item coupons evidently are very common, and occassionally they have a 50% off of a single item, which means you could get one of these for like $45!
I know it doesn't look very period up close, but it's a lot better then a rubbermaid tub (which is what I had my clothes in before).

The iron work company is: King Architectual Metals (www.kingmetals.com). It's local to me, so I didn't have to pay for shipping. The circles are the steel that they use in wrought iron fencing. I lied before, when I said they are 4", they are the 4.5" ; stock # 44-40-12H.

They also do solid twisted rings, though I don't think they show them on the web site. But they were like twice the price. You still have to make a strap or staple for them to mount to the side of your chest.

Nice! Even at $90 that would have been a great buy. Red cedar is expensive, and I doubt you could have made it for much less than that.

Nice touch on the hardware too!

I think it looks awesome and with the added hardware it is VERY medievaloid. I think it will make a nice addition to your camp.

Those coupons are really nice. Hobby Lobby puts one of the "40% off one item" coupons on their website about every other week. You are only suposed to be able to use one coupon per customer per visit, but if the line isn't backed up you the cashier has let me go through the line multiple times.

Cool project. If I attempted it, I would likely add wheels to make it easier to transport.

Are the strap hinges antique or reproduction? How much and from where/what/whom on e-bay?

Have you ordered the hasp yet?

The hinges are reproduction steel 9.5" hinges from ebay painted black. They were $6 per pair. Just do a search for strap hinges. I ordered a couple of pairs of hinges and a couple of hasps for another box I plan on making. The hasps are powder coated and were under $2 ea. +ship. I haven't received them yet.

The iron work company, King Architectural, sells carriage/strap hinges but they were much too large for this particular chest. And they start at about $10 ea. ($20+ for a pair).
