Best neckline for a fighting tunic

Post by Jestyr »

I was working on my new fighting tunic. It is coming out rather nicely and I am proud of myself.

Then I put it on over my gorget and I get depressed. It looks bad. It is a keyhole neckline, and the way it lays it just looks awkward.

Soooo... what is the best neckline to put over a gorget? Other suggestions for fighting tunics?

OK, all kidding aside . . .

Is this the tunic you wear under your armour, or one you put over it like a surcote . . . or do you wear "hidden" armour?

Tunic over my armour like a surcote. It should look like I am not wearing any armour (hidden).

You even want to hide the gorget?

I would say that if you want to hide it, a keyhole neckline with only a narrow slit down the front closed with lacing is the best way. Size the round part of the neck opening to fit around your gorget.

Thank you.

I want to hide the gorget as much as possible. I'll play with the small keyhole concept. Hopefully I can modify what I've done so far without having to sew a new neck.

nfortunately, you are encountering a non-period problem -- and therefore the solution will be ...trickier.

In period people eaither wore gorgets on top of the shirt. But you're trying to wear a gorget while pretending not to.

I think the first thing to do is examine your entire period look -- maybe there are nore elegant ways of hiding it than making your neck look deformed.

For instance, if you were doing a Roman or a Chinese, it would be a perfect warrior accessory to wear a scarf around your neck - much like a boyscout.
If you were doing a Viking - you could/ should have a maile aventail hanging from your helmet and covering your neck.
...

So - let's start by telling us who you're trying to look like.

Oh,
Can your personna go with a standing collar on the shirt?
(ie: like a "Kung Fu" shirt)
That would probably work most neatly.

Early Norman. A full aventail would be best, but I don't want to do that just yet.
