Stainless Greaves Pics

Post by Rainald »

My latest project to go with my semi gothic inspired stainless kit. I knocked this out this weekend since I had some time. A pair of 18ga stainless gutter greaves. I tried to impart some musculature in them (inner/outer calf muscles) and some space for the ankle bones. I don't know if you can tell from the pics but there is a right/left as opposed to my first try. I'll say this, they are a pain to try and make. As always critiques and comments welcome.

Looks pretty good. Like Chazz said nice smooth dish to the "muscles".
If you don't mind a couple suggestions:
The centerline flute looks somewhat too exagerated, almost like a simple fold at the top end. This will leave a substantial "dead space" at the front of your shin under your demigreave, unless your legs are shaped rather oddly. Id suggest toning it down to just a flute in an otherwise "leg-shaped" curve. The second thing is that your top edge is square, which, although it won't show when your demigreave is in place, just doesn't look *right* to me. It probably also contributes to the 'fold' look of the top end of the flute. A gentle curve is in order there. The edges are also straight lines, and for a more natural shape, should curve *out* at the muscled area, and gently in at the lower calf, and back out again over the ankle...kind of a top-heavy hourglass look to the pattern. The inside of your calf normally bulges more, and a bit lower down, than the outside. This sort of pattern will also allow you to carry the muscled dish right out to the edge without looking wierd, and will look like a straight line once you're done shaping it.
