pouring sheets of lead

Post by Tracy Justus »

I thought y'all might be interested in seeing this video of a couple of guys casting a sheet of lead alloy to use in making pipes for organs. There are some useful viewer comments as well.

Tres cool! You can see the reflection off the surface change as it freezes.

Shouldn't they be wearing respirators? I thought the fumes from molten lead were toxic.

Depends. Lead melts at 621 degrees F, and starts to vaporize at 900 degrees F. Particulate matter is still a concern, but vaporization is unlikely to be too much of a problem at low temperatures.

This is a lead alloy as well, which is even more complicated.

Ah gotcha. As a woodworker I can totally understand the whole "blade guard removed for photographic purposes, wink wink nudge nudge", but I'd have hoped if it was as bad as I had been led to believe they'd be wearing proper gear :).
