T-6 aluminum

Post by Animal »

Ok folks, where do I get aluminum like 1/16th of an inch? In strips an inch and three quarters wide? I'm in MD and would appreciate any suggestions where I could find this stuff. Thanks y'all Image

Take a trip to your local sheet metal fabricator. By a sheet of aluminum and have them cut it into strips for the amount you need. Either cut the whole thing or take the rest home in smaller sections. It will be cheaper if you buy all of it.

Ohh yeah, bring some friends. Image

It would probably be cheaper to buy a straight cutting shear and do it yourself. Maybe have the metal supplier cut the sheet into quarters first. Alot of places charge $20 bucks a cut, and you are talking about a LOT of cuts. Mad Matt might be able to do it for you, I believe he has access to an industrial shear.

Actually I was hoping for the names of some suppliers. I know there's a company that sells the aluminum in strips out there somewhere! LOL

Try this place Animal, they offer custom cuts at what seem to me to be reasonable prices.

Yellow Pages my man! Yellow Pages! If you can get to a library try the Thomas register. What you are going to need to do is figure out exactly what you want and know how to ask for it. The material you are looking for is NOT T-6. That is the temper for a material. You will need to decide on an aluminum alloy, you probably mean 6061 with a temper of T-6. Go to www.matweb.com and poke around there for info on the ultimate yields of the alloys. Aluminum is measured in thousandths of an inch not English measures. You want .062 or .060. If it is not available ask for the next nearest size up or down from what you want. Who knows they may have an oddball size in your alloy that will do just fine.
Ask for their pricing on shearing. My local shop has a set up charge and then a per cut charge. If you are getting a lot of cuts the total per cut drops. If it is still too much you can try to find someone in a school shop/vocational school that wouldn't mind doing this on the cheap.Good Luck!

I am starting to think that an essay on materials and their definitions in industry and one on how to deal with industry are becoming more necessary.

Go to this site http://www.thomasregister.com and do a search for aluminum strip, extruded aluminum, and maybe even aluminum buss bar.

You will find 100's for companies making aluminum strip. Be careful as many on the site will be mills and may require orders of 10,000'or more.

I get all my metal from Potomac Steel and Supply, Inc. I have only bought mild steel from them but they seem to have quite a selection. They also had no problem cutting my metal although they did charge me for that. They are located just off the beltway in Springfield, VA. You would need to check the phone book for a number since they have no web presence.

For my lamellar, I got two 4'x4' drop cut pieces of T-6 (drop cuts are the scraps left over from cutting up the really big sheets). It was maybe $50 for both. Then I had them cut one and a half of them into 1.5" strips, then 1/3 of those into 3.5" segments and another 1/3 into 4.5" segments, and left the last 1/3 as strips (to be cut up when I know what size lamellae I need more of). They charged by time, and since it took only 20 min. to do all of this, I only have to pay $20. WELL worth the price, considering how long it would take to do all that on a Beverly...
